Subject: An email from the Premier of Ontario

Thank you for your email about our government’s plan to reopen Ontario. I appreciate hearing your views and concerns.

No one wants to get the economy going and get people back to work more than I do. It means having a responsible plan, taking the best scientific advice and working together with our partners. It also means recognizing that the situation is different in different parts of Ontario. And, most importantly, it means doing everything necessary to keep people safe as we reopen.

On June 8, our government announced that we’re getting more people back to work and more recreational activities open by moving forward with a regional approach to Stage 2 of reopening the province. In consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and local health officials, our government is easing restrictions in communities where it is safe to do so, based on trends of key public health indicators such as lower rates of transmission, increased capacity in hospitals, and progress made in testing.

As a result of efforts of all Ontarians to stop the spread of COVID-19, many regions have met the criteria to move into the next stage of our reopening plan, including a decrease in new daily cases and sufficient hospital capacity. Our regional approach recognizes that different communities in the province are experiencing COVID-19 differently and can safely and gradually ease restrictions and reopen local businesses. We will continue to monitor any shifts in the spread and take decisive action to contain any outbreaks.

For a full list of regions opening in Stage 2 and a full list of businesses and services, visit: www.Ontario.ca/reopen. For questions about what can open during Stage 1 or what will be open or impacts in Stage 2, call the Stop the Spread Business Information Line at 1-888-444-3659.

In addition, effective Friday, June 12, 2020, at 12:01 a.m. the province will increase the limit on social gatherings from five to 10 people across Ontario, regardless of whether a region has moved to Stage 2.

To support the businesses and workers who have built Ontario’s vibrant hospitality sector, we have made changes to allow restaurants and bars to temporarily add or increase the size of their patios once they are permitted to welcome patrons on-site. Details regarding this action to support local restaurants, bars and establishments are available here: www.agco.ca/blog/alcohol/jun-2020/ontario-extending-outdoor-patios-allow-social-distancing-during-covid-19.

Our government, in partnership with health and safety associations, has released more than 100 health and safety guidance documents at Ontario.ca/COVIDsafety to help employers in multiple sectors ― including retail, restaurant and food services and child care ― keep spaces safe for workers and customers.

Since COVID-19 started, the health of the people of Ontario has been our priority. That doesn’t change now. After several months of dealing with this global pandemic, people and employers are knowledgeable about how to keep each other safe and have demonstrated they’ll do what they need to do to fight COVID-19. We will reassess local trends in public health indicators on an ongoing basis to determine the impact of the Stage 2 reopening and if additional public health unit regions can move to this next stage.

Thanks again for contacting me. We all need to continue to support one another right now, and together we will come back stronger than ever before.

Doug Ford
